The Arlitt Nature PlayScape, an intentionally designed, dynamic, vegetation-rich play environment that nurtures young children’s affinity for nature, celebrated its opening in front of French Hall in 2012. The playscape is a favorite destination for children at the Arlitt Child Development Center and is also open to the general public. Our research has highlighted the many developmental, learning, and eco-friendly benefits that occur through children’s play and engagement in this environment. Ongoing support is needed to maintain the beauty and benefits of this unique space.
In the face of COVID-19, Arlitt continues to push boundaries and promote innovative learning environments such as the Arlitt PlayScape. Designing and studying unique indoor and outdoor educative environments is an Arlitt initiative that has garnered international recognition and external funding. We aim to be a model program in our community and beyond.
The Arlitt Child Development Center, one of the oldest laboratory preschools in the USA, serves children from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and acts as a practicum site for students across a range of programs at UC. Arlitt offers children an enriching early learning experience, while contributing to cutting edge research and design of both formal and informal learning environments. Arlitt aims to be an innovator, leader, and advocate for high quality learning environments for all young children.
The Arlitt Center serves our entire bearcat community- from young children, to students, to faculty and staff. Arlitt views children as active agents in their learning and supporting these capacities from early childhood is critical to a more sustainable and equitable world.
