EnableUC is a student-run volunteer organization that makes 3D-printed medical devices ranging from pediatric prosthetics to assistive devices for traumatic brain injury. The group provides functional and cost-effective devices that enable clients to overcome disabilities — all for free.
Established by University of Cincinnati biomedical engineering students in 2015, the group seeks to utilize 3D printing to bridge the gap between engineering and medicine. By providing resources and promoting educational outreach, we enable students to design, build and implement solutions that directly benefit clients with disabilities.
Having just completed making a hand prosthetic for a client in Bolivia, the group is currently working on the following:
- Dog Prosthetic Project: This project focuses on making a prosthetic limb for a dog with a limb difference and needing assistance with moving freely and interacting with the environment.
- Prosthetic Tools Project: These projects are studying different ways EnableUC can make assistive tools for people with prosthetic limbs or limb differences so that they can be more independent and able to partake in daily activities like buttoning a shirt, brushing their teeth, driving a car, eating with a utensil, and many more.
- Azaree Hand Project: This client-centered project focuses on building Unlimbited arms for a young girl living in the Southern United States. She will be receiving two full-arm prosthetic limbs that are powered by her shoulder joint.
- CCHMC-Madkicks Project: This project aims to build baskets and other assistive tools for gait walkers used with and by children who have cerebral palsy. This project encompasses efforts for six brands of gait walkers and is one of the newest additions to EnableUC’s involvement!
