A Message from Andrew T. Filak Jr., MD - Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and Christian R. Holmes Professor and Dean, College of Medicine

Being a part of this great institution for the past 44 years, I am constantly in awe of the achievements of the entire UC College of Medicine community as they dedicate themselves to improving the lives of people in our community and around the world and making the College of Medicine indispensable.

Reflecting on the challenges and successes of the past year, I am reminded of the generosity that lives within the halls of the College of Medicine. Through it all, our educators, learners, investigators and clinicians persevered and excelled. They overcame every obstacle, finding new ways to accomplish every task at hand. They were unyielding in their passion to educate, discover and serve.

Although the last year presented unprecedented challenges, in many ways, the past year was comparable to many others. Our students continued receiving impressive awards and scholarships. Our faculty grew our research portfolio and added numerous exemplary honors. New programs began and new leaders stepped up. Our staff ably supported all these efforts.

Through “Next, Now: The Campaign for Cincinnati” and with support from individuals like you, we have made substantial progress adding to our proud history, and we entered 2022 well positioned to accelerate our efforts. After all, points of pride are all around us. For example:

  • The College of Medicine’s faculty increased our research holdings by more than 25 percent compared to 2019, with 38 percent of grant applications funded.
  • The College of Medicine launched MD/MPH, baccalaureate- and associate-degree programs in public health. The new degrees join the Masters of Public Health Program, which is certified by the Council on Education for Public Health.
  • U.S. News & World Report ranked the College of Medicine No. 17 in their new Diversity Index ranking. The Diversity Index is a way to measure how successful allopathic and osteopathic medical schools are at enrolling underrepresented minority students.
  • Several of our faculty received prestigious national awards for their efforts in addressing issues within their specialty, exceptional humanism in patient care and education and work in developing training programs for underserved international communities.

The college could not have made these important advancements without tremendous support from alumni, residency graduates, faculty and friends.

To continue to build on our history and transform our future, I am asking you to join me in giving to the College of Medicine.  Your donation will support expanded student scholarships and innovations in medical training and research, which will help us recruit the best talent in medicine. These are all essential components that will help lift our great institution to new heights.
