Black Men in Medicine Cincinnati is a supportive mentoring organization at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine dedicated to increasing the production of racial inclusion and ethnic diversity in the healthcare professions. One targeted response to the notion: “I can’t be what I can’t see”, Black Men in Medicine Cincinnati connects entering medical students with existing medical learners, those closer to completing their medical degrees, residencies, and beyond with university and community attending healthcare providers. Thus, giving them exposure and direct access to a variety of practitioners in fields the student may be interested in.
Ultimately, for these talented students, our goal is not just to promote the retention and graduation of Black males in the medical fields but to simultaneously expand their access to individuals of color in numerous specialties. Through Black Men in Medicine Cincinnati, we can support and nurture their journey to becoming successful health care providers—which will, in turn, improve the health of all but increase access to those in under-represented minority communities.
The direct benefits of this program serve as a recruitment and retention tool to increase the pipeline of black male physicians and allied healthcare providers.
Funding supports a professional development curriculum addressing relevant topics in career advancement, leadership, and financial literacy in addition to hands-on community experiences for mentors and mentees focused on community service and health education.
