UC Med Mentors is a non-profit youth mentoring organization in the UC College of Medicine. Founded in 2001 by Dr. Wan Lim, Professor Emeritus of Anatomy, UC Med Mentors has been impacting medical students and school children in Cincinnati for more than 20 years. Through a collaboration with the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, we pair medical students with local school children in grades 2-6. The Cincinnati Youth Collaborative works with school resource officers to find students in need of tutoring and mentoring and provides training and support for parents and mentors. Each year we have up to 200 medical students mentoring 100 CPS children.
The program serves as a cultural exchange, with mentors and mentees participating in all that Cincinnati offers - sports, the zoo, the aquarium, outdoor activities, movies, restaurants, and much more. In addition to experiences, mentorship and tutoring, each year 10 to 20 students are awarded laptop computers to enhance their education. The program provides enrichment for UC medical students to learn about the adversity children are facing in Cincinnati, which increases empathy and helps prepare them to be compassionate providers in the future.
Though generous philanthropy, the Dr. Wan Lim, Endowment Fund for UC Med Mentors was established to serve as a lasting resource to support the needs of the UC Med Mentors program and enrich the lives of our medical students and local school children each year. Gifts to the Dr. Wan Lim, Endowment Fund for will provide a sustaining source of support for local experiences, laptops, and educational opportunities for students. In the past, groups of students have taken day trips to the COSI museum in Columbus and a weekend trip to Chicago. This is especially moving for some of our students who have never left Cincinnati. Support the leaders of our future, by making your gift today.
